5 Reasons You Need A Good Business Mentor

“Nobody is going to hit as hard as life, but it ain’t how hard you can hit. It’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.” – Rocky Balboa, Rocky

There are arguments out there on why entrepreneurs don’t have a need for mentors and how they should follow their gut and use their own personal passion as a driver, but we are here to argue that, “Actually, they do.”  Let us explain. Everyone needs some advice from time to time and a mentor is someone who has done it before. They’ve gone through similar, if not the same, experiences you are right now, and many that you will encounter down the road of starting a new venture.

Some of the greatest of greats have had, or currently have mentors. Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook had Steve Jobs, Bill Gates considers Warren Buffet to be his mentor, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has Bill Gates – just to name a few. Sure you could manage without one, but why miss out on guidance and support from someone who has been in your shoes? Ok, well we’re convinced.

With that foundational mindset we have laid out five basic reasons why you need to go seek out a good business mentor, and we capped it off with a great source to find one.

Have a business mentor? Did they suggest updating your website? If so, drop us a line.

Reason 1: Learning from their Experiences

This is number one on our list because it also affects all the other reasons. As we opened up with, mentors have done it before. Having a mentor to talk with about ideas and ventures, allows you to make decisions, large or small, with the aid of their past experiences. What a gold mine this can be. Experience is not something you can buy, or even read in a book. Learn from what they have been through, avoid potential mistakes, and do it better.

Reason 2: Guidance in Building a Strong Business Plan

Building a strong business plan is so important. It is also a huge project that needs time and detailed attention. Unless you have done it before, chances are you will have trouble knowing where to start and what needs to be included. Navigating the confusing journey of putting together an effective business plan can be a daunting task. A mentor will know where to guide you to make a purposeful, goal driven, short-term and long-term strategic business plan.

Reason 3: An Outsider’s Perspective

We can get so wrapped up in our own ideas, thoughts and goals that it can be hard to be objective. A mentor, looking out for your best interest, can be a perfect person to get an outsider’s perspective from. Using their experiences, they can look at it from multiple hypothetical angles – as a consumer, as a business owner, as an investor etc. Stuck in a rut? – Run some thoughts by them. Bounce some new ideas. Ignite some new visions.

Reason 4: A Great Pool of Resources

A successful mentor will have incredible resources, an unlimited network of colleagues and referrals, and can be someone who will vouch for you. This means having access to other people that you will most likely need, such as lawyers, accountants, etc. For example, if you’re running into a situation where you do not know the right type of language to put into a business contract, chances are so did your mentor, and they of course overcame that situation. Thus, they know who you need to talk to and the questions you need to ask. Because they are your mentor, you can feel confident knowing they will get you in touch with the trustworthy people that all small businesses need.

Reason 5: Encouragement and Affirmation

It’s risky business starting on your own. It can also be invigorating and exciting. But having the confidence of a wise mentor through those questionable moments, may be just what the doctor ordered. Words of encouragement can go a long way when doubtful thoughts want to discourage you. “Yes this is a good plan.” “No, you’re not crazy to think that.” Reassurance in you and your goals from an experienced mentor can keep you grounded and motivate you to stay the course to success.
